An alternative approach to mental health emphasizes the interrelationship between our mind, body, and spirit. Although some alternative approaches have a long history, many remain controversial. The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) was created in 1992 to help evaluate alternative methods of treatment and to integrate those that are effective into mainstream healthcare practice. I feel it is important as a physician to continually learn about alternative care and incorporate evidence-based proven techniques into my treatment plans, if they are beneficial to my patient's mental health. Alternative Therapies are not intended to substitute for therapy and medications but rather to act in combination with them. The mention of any product, service, or therapy in this information is not an endorsement by me and it is crucial to consult with me about any approach you are currently using or plan to use to achieve mental wellness.

Easy Steps Every Patient can make towards mental wellness

Get enough sleep and go to bed around the same time every night.

Eat a balanced diet.

Get regular exercise, such as walking or swimming.

Avoid alcohol, illegal drugs, and medicines that have not been prescribed to you.

Build a strong social support system by developing positive relationships with other people, such as family members, friends, and health professionals.
